When you are trying to lose weight, you will notice that it does not usually go the way that you planned it or the way that the adverts say. You will still have a problem if you do not change lifestyle. In this one, you will be fasting, sort of, and that way, you will be able to reprogram your body to be the best fat burning machine and once you fit into it, you will have reached the peak of your fitness.

While some of you are probably making fun of the “HTTP not found the error”, I can’t find the joke in that and that says a lot because I’m the same person who would laugh for days at someone walking into a glass door.
But for those who are interested, those are my numbers. I could have laid them out anyway but I guess the humor I won’t get stifled by my disappointment. Anyway, here goes:
4 is the number of weight loss ideas I have tried. Mind you that excludes the simple stuff like drinking water before meals and apple cider vinegar tricks.
The zero represents how many actually worked for me. Sure sometimes it went down for a bit and then it stayed there and eventually I gave up and it was all so eager to come back on with extra.
And the last four is the number of dress sizes I have gone up since I exited my teenage years.
I guess I left out another number. 1000. On a scale of 1 – 100 how desperate am I to get the extra fat off and keep it off?
So what’s this about?
I came across Eat stop eat by Brad Pilon just last week while I was having one of my low days that can only be quenched by obsessively finding new ways to lose weight. Ironically Pilon’s methods are quite the opposite of new.
Just like many of us, after years of getting lost in the yo-yo of trends regarding weight loss, he had enough. One year it’s “no sugar”, the next year it’s “carbs are from the devil” and then it’s “protein only” followed by “eat vegetables on your head so that they don’t sit on your hips”! He took the time to research and write the best methods for losing weight.
When he left university with an Honors degree in Applied Human Nutrition, he found a job at a supplement company. In six years, Pilon was the Research and Development Manager of that same company that had turned into one of the leading supplement companies in the world. The time came when he felt he had to move on and while he was studying Leucine and Protein Synthesis in a bid to create an ultimate diet did he actually realize how little of the human body he actually knew.
And if a guy with a degree in Applied Human Nutrition thought he knew so little I don’t even want to imagine how clueless I am about my own body.
But what’s different?
Turns out only 2% of dieters know a secret that we don’t know because that’s the percentage of people who can keep the weight off. Maybe they’re born with it (tee-hee). Maybe they’re lucky. Or maybe we’ve been going about it the wrong way. Diets aren’t simply asking you to quit whole food groups or count the “calories” in your every bite. They’re trying to convince you to pick up a new lifestyle.
I was so glad he pointed this out because I have been thinking about this a while. Do you know who wants you to pick up a lifestyle that supports their consumerism ideas? Companies that supply these foods with newly found benefits.
Thousands of dollars are spent funding research about nutrition and it’s natural that most of the research favors the sponsor. What isn’t natural though is the amount of confusing and contradicting data thrown at us to the point where we don’t know what to believe.
What to learn from this program?
Calorie counting – I can honestly say that the reason the diets I have tried didn’t work was 5% because I have the self-control of a squirrel in a room full of nuts. Have I seen a squirrel in a room full of nuts so is this analogy a sound one?
The answer to that is the same answer to any dietitian who tells you they can help you calculate the exact amount of calories you need to take for you to function at your best without gaining any weight. They both sound valid because we can visualize it. The only difference is one is a crazy amount of work and research and the other you can probably catch a squirrel and put it in a room you filled with nuts.
With this method, you actually never have to count calories, unless of course, you want to do that as a way to sharpen your imagination.
Fed/ Fast Cycle – The body was created to be in a constant state of being fed or fasting. The reason we develop fat is for warmth in winter (that’s what I like to tell myself) or storing for when there isn’t anything to eat.
But with three meals a day, (breakfast being the most important meal of the day and coffee being a food group on its own) our bodies never have a chance to go past the fed state. In a horribly disturbing image, we’re constantly setting aside energy in fat form for a time that might never come.
Is fasting the key?
Pilon takes his cue from history. Now, I’m not a fan of history lessons but this is a good one. He reminds us that in the days of humanity people didn’t always have an abundance of food which meant that they had food to eat until it ran out and things were bad and they had to go for some time without food.
This was the key to their lean figures. Is it possibly still locked in our genetics and that’s what our bodies need to fast to lose weight? Look, I can’t confirm that, I’m just reviewing his thought process but I do believe genetic information locking is what stops animals from eating poisonous foods without teaching their generations.
Also, at this point, I’ll buy anything that’s not calorie counting.
What is the deal with fasting?
Fasting is something that has been around for ages. It’s practiced in religions and even celebrations. He used this definition:
“The act of willingly abstaining from some or all food, and in some cases drink, for a pre-determined period of time.”
The operative word being “willingly.” The purpose of this is to jump-start your metabolism without giving it a chance to adapt to any specific diet. In fact, it’s actually genius that he figured out this would be the key.
I’ll be frank with you, with all that’s around me that’s telling me to eat, I’m talking about advertisements and people around me, I am fully aware that sometimes I don’t even eat because I’m hungry but because I feel like it. Discipline is still an issue here. But I guess when you’ve hit your lowest (or highest weight gain) and you’ve made up your mind, you’ll be ready to go through this with full commitment.
Isn’t that technically starvation?
That’s the best part though. Once you’ve overcome the weakness of your flesh you’ll realize that being hungry and starving are two different things. Being hungry isn’t crippling. I probably shouldn’t be the one preaching about this since my right hand can be replaced with a snack of some sort and no one would be the wiser, but I have had my days when I can get so wrapped up in my work I can skip meals for a day.
During that time I don’t feel starved. In fact, sometimes I don’t even notice the hunger. I feel the same amount of energy, dare I say, maybe even slightly more. I’m focused and as sharp as always.
But we all have heard the rumors surrounding the great beyond the land of hunger. Fasting does not kill your metabolism nor does it deprive your body of nutrients. The list of the horrors surrounding skipping food is endless not to mention shocking. It’s almost disappointing what we’ll repeat without fact-checking especially in this day and age of information on your fingertips.
From reading the book you will find that the opposite is actually true. And to my great surprise, you can actually function at your best during a fast. And the food reserve being depleted during your fast isn’t your muscles. You can maintain your muscles during this diet.

Even if you don’t agree with it there is no harm in taking a look at things from a different perspective.
